My Heart’s Mistake

I awoke dishevelled,

unshaven and unkempt

under a pile of newspapers,

on the parkside bench

how long had you been here?

how long had you been pulling at my sleeve,

calling my name, stroking my head

searching for a response

amongst the trees

a sign

of commitment

of our future together

the one we once spoke of

I promised I would wait

and I didn’t move an inch

why didn’t I promise to stay awake?

why didn’t I promise to stay awake?

why didn’t I promise to stay awake?

that was my heart’s mistake
