As we add up the trillion dollars plus spent
The thousands of lives lost
On a war against an Iraq
Innocent of any 9/11 involvement
As we add up the cost
To a nearly bankrupt USA, Europe and beyond
We begin to ask how terror
Works in mysterious ways?

It’s not ‘correct’ to ask such a question, I’m afraid, my friend!
Please explain?
I mean that we are expected to ‘believe’ in our leaders, in their wisdom… even when they indulge in war.
To ASK is to express distrust in their decision.
But on the other hand, we live in democracies and to ask is our right.
An uncomfortable truth of “democracy” is that though you may not have voted for the administration, and certainly not voted for each individual policy of that administration, the collective responsibility of “democracy” ensnares each and every one of us in the responsibilities of that “democratic choice” and the policies of the consequent administration.
But the poem isn’t about democratic freedoms, or religion (another casualty of the war), the poem attempts to address the rhetoric of Bush’s “war on terror” which is not only bad english but also illogical and deadly.
